How to upgrade your theme to Shopify 2.0 format and standards.

Apr 10, 2023 | Shopify, Shopping Carts

We have been doing a lot of theme conversions for clients from the older Shopify standards to the newest Shopify 2.0 standard that was announced mid-2021, with actual adoption and mature support out in 2022.

Upgrading your Shopify theme to Shopify 2.0 standards involves making some changes to your theme’s code to take advantage of the new features and enhancements introduced in Shopify 2.0. Not all themes can easily be made to do this.

Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Back up your theme files: Before making any changes to your theme’s code, it’s important to create a backup copy of your existing theme files. This will help you restore your theme to its previous state if anything goes wrong during the upgrade process.
  2. Check your theme’s compatibility: Check if your current theme is compatible with Shopify 2.0. Shopify has provided a theme checker tool that you can use to determine if your theme is compatible with the new version. If your theme is not compatible, you may need to either update your theme or switch to a new one.
  3. Update your theme code: If your theme is compatible with Shopify 2.0, you can start upgrading your theme code. Here are some of the things you can do:
  • Update your theme’s sections and blocks to use the new schema format introduced in Shopify 2.0.

  • Use the new theme app extensions to add new functionality to your theme, such as customer account pages, checkout customization, and more.

  • Use the new theme API to access and manipulate your theme’s settings, such as colors, fonts, and more.

  • Update your theme’s CSS and JavaScript code to take advantage of the new features and enhancements introduced in Shopify 2.0.

Shopify 2.0 functions and features:

Shopify 2.0 introduced several changes to themes that provide improved functionality and flexibility for merchants. Some of the key changes include:

  1. New schema format for sections and blocks: Shopify 2.0 introduced a new schema format for sections and blocks, which makes it easier to add and edit content on a page. The new schema format allows for more flexibility in the types of content that can be added, such as videos, maps, and more.
  2. Theme app extensions: Theme app extensions allow app developers to add new functionality to a Shopify theme, such as custom customer account pages, checkout customization, and more. This provides more flexibility and control over the look and feel of a Shopify store.
  3. Updated theme API: The new theme API allows for more granular control over a theme’s settings, such as colors, fonts, and more. This allows developers to create more customized themes that meet the specific needs of a merchant.
  4. Improved performance and loading speed: Shopify 2.0 introduced several performance improvements, such as a new serverless rendering engine, which helps to speed up page loading times and improve overall performance.
  5. New theme editor experience: The new theme editor in Shopify 2.0 provides a more streamlined and intuitive experience for editing a theme’s code and settings.
  1. Test your theme: Once you’ve updated your theme code, it’s important to test your theme to make sure everything is working as expected. Test your theme in different browsers and devices to ensure that it is responsive and displays correctly.
  2. Publish your theme: Once you’re satisfied with your upgraded theme, you can publish it to your live Shopify store.

In short, upgrading your Shopify theme to Shopify 2.0 standards involves checking your theme’s compatibility, updating your theme code, testing your theme, and publishing it to your live store. It’s important to make a backup copy of your existing theme files before making any changes, and to test your theme thoroughly before publishing it to ensure that it works correctly.
