A Step By Step Guide On Backing Up Your Squarespace Website

Jul 1, 2024 | How-to's

Backing up a Squarespace site involves saving your content, images, and any custom code or CSS, since Squarespace doesn’t provide a built-in backup feature. Here are the steps to ensure you have a comprehensive backup of your Squarespace site:

Step 1: Export Your Content

Squarespace allows you to export your site content, though there are some limitations.

  1. Go to Settings: In your Squarespace dashboard, navigate to the “Settings” menu.
  2. Access Advanced Settings: Click on “Advanced” and then select “Import / Export.”
  3. Export Your Site: Click on the “Export” button. Squarespace will prepare an XML file that includes your basic pages, blog pages, and image blocks. Note that certain content like products, album pages, and event pages won’t be included in the export.
  4. Download the XML File: Once the export is complete, download the XML file to your computer.

Step 2: Manually Backup Images and Files

Since the export process does not include all your images and files, you’ll need to manually save them.

  1. Download Images: Navigate to each page and blog post with images. Right-click on the images and save them to your computer.
  2. Download Files: If you have files (like PDFs, documents, etc.) linked on your site, download them from the links provided.

Step 3: Backup Custom Code and CSS

If you’ve added any custom code or CSS to your Squarespace site, ensure you save this as well.

  1. Access Code Injection: Go to “Settings” > “Advanced” > “Code Injection.” Copy any custom code you’ve added and save it in a text file.
  2. Save Custom CSS: Go to “Design” > “Custom CSS.” Copy all custom CSS and save it in a text file.

Step 4: Backup Blog Posts

For a thorough backup, you might want to save individual blog posts.

  1. Use RSS Feed: Access your blog’s RSS feed (typically at yourdomain.com/blog?format=rss). Save the XML file that loads, which includes all your blog posts.
  2. Manually Save Posts: Alternatively, you can manually copy and paste the content of each blog post into a document or use a tool like Evernote to save them.

Step 5: Save Site Settings and Configuration

Record your site’s settings and configuration to help with future site setups.

  1. Take Screenshots: Take screenshots of important settings pages within Squarespace, including page settings, SEO settings, and any other configurations you might need.
  2. Document Settings: Manually document your site settings, including navigation structure, page URLs, and any integrations or third-party services connected to your site.

Step 6: Use Third-Party Tools

Consider using third-party tools or services to create a more comprehensive backup.

  1. SiteSucker: A tool like SiteSucker for Mac can download an entire website, including images and files, to your computer.
  2. HTTrack: For Windows users, HTTrack can download your entire site for offline use.

By following these steps, you can ensure that you have a complete backup of your Squarespace site, safeguarding your content and customizations. This backup will be invaluable if you decide to migrate to another platform or need to restore your site at any point.
